Starvation

Jane's story is set in western Washington- just across the Puget Sound from Seattle. The historical site and incidents are known locally as Starvation Heights. While what went on at the remote hospital during the turn of the century was full of malice and yes, murder, Jane's story reminds us of the power of a letter in helping us know what really fills us up and who we can truly count on when things get rough.

Unorthodox Treatments at Wilderness Heights

Hazzard

Linda Burfield Hazzard wrote a book entitled Fasting for the Cure of Disease.  Her homeopathic treatment was supposed to cure everything from cancer to constipation.  Patients were to follow a 40+ day regimen of one small bowl of tomato or asparagus soup, long walks, enemas and vigorous massages. Her Wilderness Heights Sanitarium attracted patients the 1890’s to 1912. It is said that she starved at least 15 patients before being convicted of manslaughter for her "cure." Ironically, "Doctor" Hazzard died  of self-starvation in 1938.

Writer's Recollections

I read Gregg Olsen's non-fiction book about this remote hospital on Puget Sound and knew one day I'd want to write about it as a novel. "A Saving Grace" was my answer and I loved having it included in this collection of novellas
