Describe the photo or the page it links to

Peek into an aged journal that links the adventurous lives of four courageous midwives. Wisconsin farmer, widow, mother, and midwife Adele Marley is too busy for a smitten, unwavering banker. To survive in love and life, Polly Schultz must rise above her fears on the Oregon Trail. Christiana is in a battle to prove to one man that she can be both a wife and a midwife. Her confidence shaken, Kendra Silverstone needs confirmation of God’s hand in her life and love. How will God work to give these women the direction they need?

Mirror Pond

MirrorPond

This is Mirror Lake in Mondovi Wisconsin. It was known in the story as Mirror Pond. That's how I knew it growing up. An aunt and uncle lived on a nearby farm; we lived three miles from town on a dairy; and many other cousins lived with a 50 miles radius of my dad's four brothers and one sister. It was a family affair to picnic on the pond.

"With Woman"

Farm

The story began in Wisconsin with a widow and a foster child enjoying a calm and pleasant life on their dairy farm when she's asked to midwife the banker's sister. Everything changes with that request for a midwife, a word that means "with woman" and that's what Adele committed to be, with this woman even though she was not an easy patient to serve.

Midwives

We learn of midwives in the Old Testament - Exodus chapter 1.

Throughout history, midwives have played a vital role in assisting mothers during childbirth and afterward.

In colonial days, midwives nearly exclusively attended women during childbirth.

Praise for Jane Kirkpatrick's The Midwife's Legacy

I enjoyed this book a lot. I thought the concept was fascinating, and liked the way it tied the four stories together. Each of the women is so different but they are tied together by family, profession and the journal.
I appreciated the inclusion of the Oregon Trail, the first thing I think of when I think of Oregon, but I think the book is slightly mislabeled. However this was a minor issue for me. I did think it ironic that of the four authors the only one who lives in Oregon wrote one not set in the state.
Faith is a major theme in this book. Each one of the women experiences circumstances that does or could shake their faith, but their faith is the only thing that gets them through.
Overall, this is an interesting book. I give it four and a half out of five stars.

Author's Insight

What fun it was to write about my home town back in the mid 1800's. The photograph of Mirror Pond looks very much like how it looked when I was a child and the tall white mill still stood. In the winter I'd ice skate on that pond (they call it a lake now) and once on my February birthday I went there with my dad to ice fish. Very cold, especially my feet as we didn't have a little hut and mostly I think my dad wanted to chat with the other farmers taking a day off to fish.
